Medical Research

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical need to invest in medical research, healthcare, and treatment reforms that encourage scientific collaboration, fuel disruptive thinking, and accelerate the translation of innovative ideas from the laboratory into real vaccines and treatments that can be accessed by patients.

The Michelson Center for Public Policy works with policymakers to meet these goals by advocating for policies that expand the National Institutes for Health, support early career researchers, and modernize the Food and Drug Administration.

What We’re Working On

Supporting Early Career Researchers

Early career researchers in biomedical research face increasing struggles due to a lack of independent funding opportunities. Tenure-track faculty positions place many early career researchers in a cycle of training positions that may hinder growth, innovation and scientific independence.

We support policies that help to create new models and approaches for supporting early career researchers in the biomedical sciences while strengthening the high-risk high-reward research portfolio of the National Institutes for Health (NIH).

Breakthroughs in Immunology

Listen to Dr. Michelson in a recent podcast discussing the California Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy: “We need to de-silo these brilliant scientists from all these different disciplines and have them live and work together on a common project. We need to do something that’s never been done—we need to build a ‘Field of Dreams’ research center with about 500-600 scientists.” —Dr. Gary K. Michelson

Modernizing the Food and Drug Administration

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates the critical need to invest in health care and treatment reforms that will accelerate the pathway to cures for global challenges. The race to develop therapeutics and vaccines was dramatically accelerated due to the robust support and funding from the federal government to federal research agencies and private companies.

We support policies that will modernize the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and speed the translation of innovative ideas into impact for patients to combat global health challenges.
